It can be tough to look at an outdated or inefficient kitchen and imagine its full potential. You might find yourself thinking, “If only I had…,” before flipping through magazines or scrolling online for before-and-after kitchen remodels that highlight how the right cabinets, an ideal center island, or the addition of a Butler’s pantry can completely transform a space.
If a kitchen makeover is in your future, it’s best to start with an interior designer who specializes in remodeling projects, such as Ashley Mock with Highmark Builders. “I gravitate toward timeless design, which can take many forms depending on the client,” she says. “It’s my goal to draw out their unique style while staying in tune with the natural elements surrounding a home.”
After design school, Ashley was drawn to residential remodeling and has since taken on many roles including Design and Project Development for Highmark Builders, Interior Designer at Ruby + Suede, president of the National Kitchen and Bath Design Association’s Minnesota Chapter, and she’s also a certified cabinet specialist.
Take a look at two beautiful before-and-after kitchen remodels Ashley recently completed.
Hampshire Drive
The owners of this 1939 Minneapolis home struggled with a remodel that had been completed in the 1990s by the previous owners. “The main issue was the countertops,” says Ashley. “They were not constructed at standard countertop height, so normal appliances didn’t fit properly underneath.” The 113-square-foot kitchen also suffered from a dark moodiness that didn’t match the homeowner’s classic, timeless style.
After the Kitchen Remodel
During the kitchen remodeling process, Ashley proposed custom blue and white cabinetry to match the colorful accents throughout the home. Much-needed accessories were also added to help the space function better. White Cambria countertops and a Chantilly White subway tile backsplash infuse light into dark corners. All new white oak flooring and chrome drawer pulls and a matching faucet help to carry the brightness throughout the space.
The kitchen layout remained the same, but a beverage center that doubles as a pantry was added to the eat-in kitchen area.
Between the kitchen and dinette, a tiny closet was removed to make way for a coat area with built-in bench to help clear the clutter of shoes near the back door.

Haven Manor
The owners of this Shorewood, Minnesota, home interviewed nearly every builder in town before selecting Highmark Builders. “They didn’t feel like they clicked with anyone, or that any of the builders they talked to really listened or understood what they wanted for their kitchen makeover,” says Ashley. But once Ashley began discussing the possibilities for their 205-square-foot kitchen, which previously had failing appliances, dated cabinetry and a wild mix of woods on the floor, they knew she shared their vision for a revamped space that would function properly and entertain their large family.
After the Kitchen Remodel
Drawn to a modern, organic style, these homeowners wanted to honor the Lake Minnetonka vibe without being too “coastal.” No deep blues or stark whites for them; instead, Ashley helped them bring the natural colors of their wooded lot inside. Light taupe walls complement the custom stained rift-cut white oak cabinetry. A porcelain version of a Zelige tile, reminiscent of the colors of seashells, accentuates the backsplash.
The overhead light matches the warmth of the gold faucet and drawer pulls. And the gentle slope of the custom range hood mimics the two existing archways leading into the kitchen.
A Butler’s pantry was added to maximize kitchen storage space and allow the homeowners to keep often-used appliances close by.
